🥋 5 Years with Han Taekwondo

How Two Girls Grew in Strength, Confidence and Character

As parents, we all want our children to grow up healthy, confident and resilient.

But finding an activity that children genuinely enjoy — and are willing to stick with for years — is not always easy.

For our two daughters, Jenna and Jean, that journey started quite unexpectedly.

From Gymnastics to Taekwondo

The girls initially tried gymnastics, but somehow, it never became something they were truly passionate about.

Then we discovered Han Taekwondo.

We decided to let them try a trial class without any big expectations. But after that first session, we could immediately tell that something was different.

They enjoyed it.

What started as simply “let's give it a try” eventually became a 5-year journey.

Looking back now, we realise that they gained much more from Taekwondo than just learning kicks and punches.

đź’Ş 1. Building a Healthy and Active Lifestyle

Like many children today, our girls spend a lot of time at school and, naturally, there is also plenty of screen time.

Having a regular Taekwondo class gave them a reason to get up, move, exercise and challenge themselves physically.

This became especially valuable during the period after COVID, when opportunities for school sports and other physical activities were more limited.

Over the years, we saw their fitness, coordination and physical confidence steadily improve.

More importantly, being active became part of their routine.

🌱 2. Growing Confidence and Discipline

One of the biggest changes we noticed was their confidence.

At the beginning, they were sometimes hesitant when learning something new.

But as they progressed through their training and grading, they began to experience something very important:

“I worked hard, and I did it.”

Those small achievements gradually built into real self-confidence.

They also learned discipline — listening to instructions, respecting others, staying focused and continuing to practise even when something was difficult.

These are qualities that don't just stay inside the dojang.

They become part of who a child is.

🥋 3. Learning to Face Challenges

Sparring was probably one of the biggest challenges at the beginning.

For a child, standing in front of another student and actually sparring can feel intimidating.

But instead of avoiding that fear, they learned to face it little by little.

Every time they completed a challenging session, they experienced a sense of achievement.

Over time, we could see them becoming more comfortable with being uncomfortable.

And perhaps that is one of the most valuable lessons Taekwondo has given them:

Challenges don't always have to be avoided. Sometimes, we simply need to take the first step and keep going.

❤️ What Made Us Stay for 5 Years?

Of course, the children need to enjoy the activity.

But for parents, the people teaching them matter just as much.

We are especially grateful to Master Cho and the instructors at Han Taekwondo for the way they guide the children.

They maintain discipline and clear expectations, but they do so without constantly scolding or putting pressure on the children.

Instead, they encourage them, give positive feedback and patiently help them improve.

We have always felt that the instructors genuinely care about the children's development — not just as Taekwondo students, but as young people.

As parents, that gives us a great deal of confidence.

Because ultimately, we are not looking only for an activity that keeps our children busy after school.

We want them to be in an environment where they can grow.

✨ More Than Just a Martial Art

After five years, we can honestly say that Taekwondo has given Jenna and Jean much more than physical strength.

It has helped them develop:

💪 Physical fitness 🌱 Confidence 🎯 Discipline

🥋 Resilience ❤️ Respect and character

Most importantly, they have learned that progress doesn't happen overnight.

You keep showing up. You keep practising. You make mistakes. You try again.

And little by little, you become stronger.

That is something we hope they will carry with them long after they leave the dojang.

Our Recommendation to Other Parents

If you're a parent in Singapore looking for an activity that can help your child become stronger, more confident and more resilient, we would genuinely recommend giving Taekwondo a try.

You never know.

A simple trial class might become a journey that lasts five years — and perhaps much longer.

For us, it certainly has.

Thank you to Master Cho and the entire Han Taekwondo team for being part of Jenna and Jean's journey. 🥋❤️

We look forward to seeing where the next chapter takes them.
