A Complete Guide to Taekwondo Belts: What Each Colour Means (WT & STF System)

When exploring martial arts options in Singapore, two questions top the list for prospective students and parents: "How long does it take to get a Black Belt?" and "What do the different belt colours actually represent?"

At HAN Taekwondo, our curriculum strictly follows the World Taekwondo (WT) and Singapore Taekwondo Federation (STF) syllabus under official Kukkiwon standards. A Taekwondo belt is far more than a measure of kicking technique—it is a visual milestone of character development, discipline, and personal growth.

The 10-Kup Belt Progression

Under World Taekwondo regulations, all practitioners—from young children to adults—begin their journey as colour belts (Kup) before advancing to Black Belt status (Poom/Dan).

The journey spans 10 Kup levels across six foundational colours: White, Yellow, Green, Blue, Red, and Black.

From Yellow to Red, each colour features two distinct grades (e.g., Yellow Belt / Kup 9, followed by Senior Yellow Belt / Kup 8). This structured approach ensures steady, achievable progress at every stage.

What Do the Belt Colours Symbolise?

Each belt colour represents a vital phase in a student’s physical, technical, and mental maturation:

  • ⚪ White Belt (10th Kup) | The Seed of Beginnings

Symbolises purity and an unwritten page. The beginner enters with no prior knowledge and is ready to absorb fundamental skills alongside core dojang etiquette.

  • 🟡 Yellow Belt (9th & 8th Kup) | Taking Root

Represents the soil in which a seed takes root. Students learn fundamental stances, basic kicks, and defensive blocks while establishing focus and mental discipline.

  • 🟢 Green Belt (7th & 6th Kup) | Early Growth

Symbolises the plant reaching upward. As techniques develop, students build stamina, coordination, and fundamental sparring confidence.

  • 🔵 Blue Belt (5th & 4th Kup) | Reaching Higher

Represents the sky toward which the plant grows. Techniques become refined, with an increased focus on agility, precision, and speed execution.

  • 🔴 Red Belt (3rd to 1st Kup) | Power & Self-Control

Symbolises danger and intense energy. Possessing strong physical techniques, the student’s focus shifts to emotional control, humility, and self-restraint.

  • ⬛ Black Belt (1st Dan / Poom) | Mastery & Continuous Learning

The opposite of white, symbolising maturity and proficiency. Earning a Black Belt is not the end of training—it marks the beginning of true Taekwondo mastery.

Poom vs. Dan: Understanding Black Belt Ranks

Parents frequently ask about the distinction between a Poom belt and a Dan belt:

  • Poom Belt (Half Red / Half Black): Awarded to qualified candidates under 15 years old.

  • Dan Belt (Solid Black): Awarded to qualified candidates aged 15 and older.

Key Takeaway: A Poom rank holds the exact same technical authority and global Kukkiwon recognition as a Dan rank. Once a Poom holder reaches age 15, they can officially convert their rank to a Kukkiwon Dan through a designated administrative conversion process. Please note that specific conversion procedures and administrative requirements may vary slightly depending on the national governing body (such as STF in Singapore).

── The 4 Poom Levels

Junior practitioners progress through 1st Poom to 4th Poom, providing young achievers with clear long-term goals alongside their academic journey.

── The 9 Dan Levels

The Dan rank for adults is structured into **9 distinct degrees (1st Dan to 9th Dan):

⬛ 1st Dan to 3rd Dan

Focuses on mastering advanced martial techniques, physical conditioning, and foundational instructional abilities.

⬛ 4th Dan to 5th Dan

Represents Master-level proficiency, where practitioners focus on high-level technical precision and teaching leadership.

⬛ 6th Dan to 9th Dan

Grandmaster ranks, awarded for decades of dedicated training, global contributions to Taekwondo, and lifelong commitment to the art.

The Singapore (STF) System: Star Belts for Young Learners

While core syllabus standards strictly align with global WT regulations, the Singapore Taekwondo Federation (STF) and local dojangs incorporate Star Belts within the White Belt phase for young children.

These micro-milestones keep our youngest toddlers and preschoolers continuously motivated, building early confidence and positive goal-setting habits from the very start.
