How to Wear Taekwondo Protective Gear Before Sparring: A Step-by-Step Guide
Updated: 1 day ago
At HAN Taekwondo, we believe that proper preparation is an important part of responsible and effective Taekwondo training.
Before sparring, students need to wear their protective gear correctly so that they can practise Taekwondo techniques with greater confidence while maintaining appropriate safety standards.
For beginners and parents, putting on Taekwondo protective equipment can sometimes feel confusing. This simple guide explains the essential equipment and how to wear it correctly before starting a sparring session.
Please note: Protective gear is designed to help reduce the risk of injury, but it does not eliminate risk completely. Equipment should always fit properly and be checked before training under the guidance of a qualified instructor.
Taekwondo Sparring Equipment
The main protective equipment used for Taekwondo sparring includes:
Headgear
Chest Protector
Arm Guards
Shin Guards
Groin Guard
Gloves
Foot Guards
Mouthguard
Essential Protective Gear Recommended at HAN Taekwondo
For sparring sessions, HAN Taekwondo recommends the following essential protective equipment:
Headgear
Chest Protector
Arm Guards
Shin Guards
Groin Guard
Students should make sure their protective gear is properly fitted before beginning sparring.
How to Wear Taekwondo Protective Gear
1. Arm Guards
Place the arm guard so that it is aligned with the end of the wrist, with the centre of the guard positioned along the middle of the outer forearm.
Use the two straps to secure the arm guard firmly so that it does not move during training.
Tip: Align the arm guard with the end of your wrist.
The guard should feel secure while still allowing comfortable movement.

2. Shin Guards
Align the bottom of the shin guard with the ankle, keeping the centre of the guard over the middle of the shin.
Use the two straps to secure the guard firmly in place.
Tip: Align the shin guard with the ankle.
Before sparring, move your leg and make sure the guard does not slide or rotate.

3. Groin Guard
The groin guard should be worn over underwear and positioned securely before putting on the bottom of the dobok.
Make sure it is comfortable and properly positioned before starting training.
For younger students, parents may need to help check that the equipment is worn correctly before class.
4. Headgear
Place the headgear comfortably on your head and adjust it so that your vision is not blocked.
Use the straps to secure the headgear firmly so that it does not move during sparring.
Before starting, move your head from side to side and check that the headgear remains securely in place without affecting your vision.
5. Chest Protector
Put on the chest protector and adjust it so that it fits securely around your body without moving during sparring.
Fasten the straps or laces firmly. The tying method is similar to tying a pair of shoelaces.
Once secured, move your upper body and check that the chest protector stays in the correct position.
A properly fitted chest protector should feel secure while still allowing comfortable movement.
6. Foot Guards
Place the foot guards securely over your feet so that they fit closely against the top of the foot.
Position them so that the toes are slightly visible, then use the two straps to secure the guards around the ankle.
The ankle straps should sit inside the shin guards, and the straps should cross over each other when secured.
After putting them on, move your feet and ankles to make sure the foot guards remain in the correct position.
