How to Tie a Taekwondo Belt: A Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners

2 min read

At HAN Taekwondo, we believe that wearing the dobok correctly and tying the Taekwondo belt properly are important parts of basic Taekwondo etiquette.

For beginners, tying a belt may feel difficult at first. With regular practice, however, students can learn to tie their own belt correctly and confidently.

How to Tie a Taekwondo Belt

1. Wrap the belt around your waist

Wrap the belt around your waist and make sure both ends are the same length.

At HAN Taekwondo, we position the belt so that the student’s name is on the left and the dojang name is on the right.

2. Make the first knot

Cross the two ends of the belt to form an X shape.

Bring the upper end underneath the other end and tighten it to make the first knot.

3. Make the second knot

Cross the two ends again to form another X shape.

Bring the upper end underneath the other end and complete the second knot.

4. Tighten and straighten the belt

Pull both ends firmly to secure the belt.

Make sure the belt is secure, comfortable and neatly positioned around your waist.

Practise Tying Your Own Belt

As a Taekwondo practitioner, learning to tie your own belt is an important part of your training.

It may take a few attempts at first, but regular practice will help you become more confident and independent.

At HAN Taekwondo, we teach students that wearing the dobok correctly and tying the belt properly are not just small details. They are part of developing discipline, respect and good Taekwondo etiquette.

Keep practising until you can tie your own belt confidently without assistance.
